Experience China

| Jul - Aug 2007 Program |
Dr Dale Mason (UQ, Cromwell College)
Hard to express in words or even through pictures the depth of the intimate experience of China. Look forward to seeing you at the feedback session, am able and happy to attend. Good to be back yet reluctant and sad to leave Xi-an and the wonderful people there. |
Ms Tess Hall ( UQ)
It was amazing experiencing the quirks of the Chinese culture, and meeting and befriending all the children, teachers and towns people. I didn¡¯t want to leave!
I felt very prepared by the training program and was glad that there was a week-long delay between it and take off to China. The program effectively taught me the basics about classroom management, different learning styles and fun ways to integrate learning content and student participation/engagement.
The lesson plans were very useful to get ideas about teaching the particular topics in engaging ways, whilst covering all the required content. Although the school provided us with activity booklets, it was comforting to have the lesson plans as backup.
It was very helpful and necessary having an English translator present in the classroom at all times (given that my students had never learned English before).
The optional tour of Beijing and Shanghai was really interesting and we covered quite a few famous sites, with flexibility to negotiate for our interests (like shopping). The tour guides were very helpful and knowledgeable.
The food was of course amazing! |

The Australia City College exchange program is an unprecedented opportunity to experience the educational and cultural orientations of China. We both study international and public relations, and had an intricate knowledge of China prior to our departure. To see the sheer economic and social development first hand is spectacular. The Chinese culture is rich in history and achievement. The Australia City College exchange program is the perfect introduction to the importance of China in the 21st century. |

Overall my time in China was fantastic! It was a lovely school to teach at, the students were gorgeous, the other teachers on the trip were great and we had so much fun together, everything was very well planned and I am so grateful to ACC and others for organising it all! I loved the food in China , and the people, and the cities- they were so different to anything I'd seen before. Shanghai was so exciting, Beijing and Xian had so much history, Hangzhou was so beautiful and Hong Kong was so much fun. |

For me the China Experience was excellent! It was exactly what I was hoping for, with an opportunity to learn about another culture, partake in different, varied and new activities, and make new friends, with both Australian and Chinese people.
I'd like to return to China for a longer period. I hope to do so in the near future. Working or studying in China would be an exciting proposition for me. I would most definitely recommend your program to other students and friends.
I would hope that in the future the host families and/or teachers could have the opportunity to travel to Australia . When this occurs it would be lovely to allow us the opportunity to offer them the same hospitality in our homes to allow them to experience Australian culture and friendship. |

China is mind blowing. I feel very lucky to have visited such a dynamic and culturally rich country on the verge of great change. Having experienced the culture as both a guest of my lovely hosts, the Wang family in Shanghai and as a traveller in the picturesque city of Hangzhou with its beautiful lakes and history and also visiting spectacular Beijing , I believe I am extremely lucky.
My class of kids were absolutely brilliant. They were polite, so enthusiastic and keen to learn, so much so that at some times I would have to force them to take their breaks so I could quickly duck off to get more resources and swap activities within our group of teachers. Sport was great fun for the kids ¨C they absolutely loved it. I made a special arrangement so that I could take them outside or to the gymnasium everyday in the afternoon unless we were visiting something which was excellent. As for the dancing and singing, my class wasn't that impressed with doing that as much as Natalie's, however towards the end they improved. Bringing three classes into the conference room with Nat and Jack was really good for dancing and singing. |

In retrospect, our time spent teaching and travelling in China was one of, if not the, most rewarding experiences of our collective lives. Meeting new people, experiencing a completely antithesising culture, and using our natural language skills for such a new and diverse experience was both memorable and fulfilling.
We felt that staying with a host family was great way to simultaneously be fully submerged with the culture, whilst still having help and assistance with any complications that can arise. The bond that we have both formed with our host students and their immediate family is quite special, and one that will surely be further developed in the future.
The teaching program within the school was especially rewarding, and we both feel that the children really enjoyed and appreciated the time that we spent there. The teaching assistants were very helpful, and vital in communicating some of the finer details that could not be demonstrated with pictures alone. |

| ---------- When apply: "Why you would like to participant in this program? " |
Angela Moyer (USQ)
The main reason why I would like to visit and work in China is to experience the diversity of other cultures. Within Australian classrooms there are various nationalities and we strive for multiculturalism. However, my own personal experiences in this area are limited and this visit will allow me to experience this first hand. This will allow me to be more understanding and tolerant to other cultures when I finish my degree and become a teacher whether it be in Australia or in another country.
I believe this experience will increase my knowledge of other cultures making it beneficial when my family participates in home stay programs. |

¡¡¡¡⊕ First and foremost, it would be a wonderful experience to engage in whilst studying Education at University.
¡¡¡¡⊕ As stated above I completed an exchange trip in 2001-2002 as a high school student. I wish to extend on this experience through my uni and teaching career travelling and working my way around globe, bringing culture home into Australian classroom. This constitutes to my plan of being a life long learner in the 21st century.
¡¡¡¡⊕ A young relative of mine was adopted from China five years ago. I wish to learn and experience the culture first hand to better understand her cultural heritage.
¡¡¡¡⊕ This experience not only benefits my own personal development, but the development of becoming teacher, catering for the individual needs of learners.
¡¡¡¡⊕ As this would be the first time teaching English in a foreign county, it would provide me with the skills, strategies and experience to teach ESL students in Australian classrooms and provide a stepping stone to further teaching abroad.

I studied chinese all through primary school and became fascinated by the culture. I¡¯ve always enjoyed tutoring and learning and I feel this would give me the perfect chance to apply both.

I was planning a trip to China in February when I learned about the program. It looks like an excellent opportunity to expand my experience in teaching English, and to experience Chinese culture as more than just another tourist. I believe I can contribute a lot to cultural exchange between Australia and China.
